UP CENTENNIAL: HOMECOMING OF "Iskolar ng Bayan"

In celebration of the University of the Philippines’ centennial year, Jessica Soho, Journalism graduate and a UP alumna awardee for Communication and Information, revisits her Alma Mater. She would reminisce her old bygone times as a student, by riding the UP Ikot jeepney and making a stopover in her old dormitory Yakal Residence Hall
And not only Jessica revisits UP. The band Eraserheads who composed songs during their stay in UP, returns to the campus. They goes back to Kalayaan Residence Hall where they all met, bonded and honed their talent. Meanwhile, Manix Abrera who created comic character “Kiko Machine" which reflects the microcosm of life in UP, returns as well to the university where he has also drawn inspiration.
Some issues affecting UP will also be discussed. From Tuition Fee Increase to the reported proliferation of well off students in the university, which was first established for the poor but deserving scholars.
This Saturday, let’s unite and hear the interesting stories of “Iskolar ng Bayan"!

(June 25 to July 6, 2008, Cultural Center of the Philippines) This year’s festival features twenty-three new plays and three plays from the previous season in six main exhibition trilogies and staged readings. Activities include a book launch, audience talk back sessions and a symposium. The Virgin Labfest has earned a solid eputation for its exciting and provocative line-up of "untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged" new work from playwrights. The line-up for Virgin Labfest 4 includes plays by National Artist F. Sionil Jose, award-winning playwrights Floy Quintos, Layeta Bucoy, Tim Dacanay, Allan Lopez, Debbie Tan, Job Pagsibigan, Njel de Mesa, George de Jesus III and J. Dennis Teodosio, previous labfest entrants Yoji Sakate, George Vail Kabristante, Rogelio Braga and Argel Tuazon, as well as newcomers to festival: Carlo Garcia, Anna Marie Gonzales, Jovi Miroy, Khavn de la Cruz and Malaysian writer Koh Jun Eiow. Tatlong mag-aaral mula sa public school na papasok ng UP Diliman ang sinundan ni Howie Severino para sa I-Witness. Dala-dala ng bawat isa ang pag-asa ng kanilang pamilya at komunidad, at ang tatak bilang miyembro ng centennial batch ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas.
Ang isa ay anak ng pulis mula sa Leyte, ang isa ay anak ng fishball vendor sa Maynila, at ang pangatlo ay anak ng jeepney driver. Sila ang mga kabataang tunay na maituturing na iskolar ng bayan, sa isang pamantasang unti-unting
napupuno na ng mga maykayang mag-aaral mula sa mga eksklusibong high school.
Makikita natin ang unti-unting paglaki ng kanilang mundo sa pagkilala ng mga bago nilang kaklase at sa pagharap nila sa ilang di inaasahang pangyayari. Ang kanilang freshman orientation ay ginulo ng mga ralyista. Ito ang tila naging hudyat ng magiging buhay nila sa pamantasan.
Danasin ang buhay ng mga “Iskolar ng Bayan" sa dokumentaryo ni Howie Severino ngayong Lunes ng hatinggabi sa I-Witness.
